First meeting with my Artist Mentor

I had an introductory meeting with Matthew Gamber last week and caught up on where I have been and where I am going with art.
Check out The Decordova's past exhibition on Abstraction
Mass MOCA's current photography shows
Mills Gallery BCA show on Acadia
Gallery Kaafus Landscape as Fetish
Anxiety and Photography - book

We discussed ways to go about a daily photographic practice. He challenged me to take a broad subject and narrow it down to something specific. The art is in the aesthetic observation of many little gestures. In the past, I worked for many years as a photojournalist. I still have a keen interest in current events and social movements. I was thinking that I could apply this strategy to events in the daily news.

Climate Change and the Erosion of Plum Island

Plum Island is a barrier island on north east coast of Massachusetts. The sandy beach is slowly receding, and the houses built there are particularly impacted by coastal storms. As the oceans rise, the future of these precarious places remains to be seen.
Below is a google image search of the effects of the erosion in 2015, followed by two images I made on the sand dunes.

Reclaimation of Utøya

Last month, I was visiting friends in Norway, and we hiked up to an overlook. The view was spectacular with mountains in the distance surrounding Lake Tyrifjorden. In the lake are several islands one of which is Utøya. On this island a horrible shooting spree took place killing 69 people. Just recently Norwegian youth reclaimed Utoya island four years after the massacre. They came together in remembrance and healing. Just to the left of the frame lies Utøya.

Tillmans at the Astrup Fearnley Museet

It was great to see the work of Wolfgang Tillmans in person. Seeing it full size was such a different experience than seeing his work in books.
